El Centro - The Center of Vancouver's Taco Universe

Image
As most of you know I was born in Mexico City and moved to Vancouver in 1999. It was definitely a huge culture shock at the time and while I love being a Canadian citizen and enjoying the benefits of a peaceful and violence-free life, there are a lot of things I still miss about Mexico.  The main three things I crave are the warmth of the people, the amazing weather, and the outstanding food. Mexico has one of the richest and most extensive food cultures in the world. Our lives revolve around eating with our friends and relatives and spending hours discussing controversial topics and laughing and singing over a meal. Some of the best food I have ever eaten was made in Mexico and that's mostly because people there are proud to spend two days in the kitchen to prepare something for you - it's the way they show their love. Due to my adoration of Mexican food, I'm always on the hunt for high-quality Mexican spots in Vancouver. Tacos are my weakness and even though I have b

The Eatery: My Restaurant Self

Image
I have been to The Eatery many times before but for some reason I had never really taken the time to talk about it until now. To me this little restaurant is the epitome of cool. It is located in the trendy Vancouver neighbourhood of Kitsilano where yogis and hipsters forget about their differences and go out for drinks instead. I am certain that if you have never been to The Eatery before you will be shocked the first time you enter the restaurant. The decor is beyond over the top and fun with glow-in-the-dark vinyl toys and giant superheroes and octopi hanging from the ceiling. Astro Boy, Marilyn Monroe and Dick Tracy also reside on the restaurant's walls. As if this were not exhilarating enough, you can count on your senses also being stimulated by amazing electro beats from @darrenwoodhead and delicious and creative sushi rolls from the kitchen. My favourite roll is by far "The Beautiful" - scallop, avocado and mayo topped with smoked salmon - 2-DIE-FOR!~ - but I

Aria Dental - How I Plan To Get A Whiter Smile!

Image
My husband @guccisimo and I are somewhat new to the Coal Harbour area and therefore we were looking for a great local dentist to keep our smiles white and healthy. We decided to give Dr. Mehio a try as we had received a couple of pamphlets from Aria Dental in the mail and my best friend had recently visited them too. My first reactions when I walked in the clinic for the first time included amazement and bliss. The folks at Aria Dental really paid attention to every detail in terms of design and client comfort. They have designed a truly beautiful place where patients can go to get healthier teeth. Sara, the receptionist, is extremely friendly and knowledgeable and she will make sure you are fully aware of any hidden costs or charges before they go ahead with any procedures. She will also take care of any insurance claims - mine were sent electronically and therefore there were not upfront costs. Also, I was very impressed with being able to fill out my medical history in an el

GUU - My 20 Minute Trip To Japan [Restaurant Review]

Image
Photo by: Esther Y Yesterday I decided to visit GUU Izakaya for the first time. I live in downtown Vancouver and therefore I always saw big lineups of people waiting outside of their restaurants as I walked by. I had heard great things about this traditional Japanese tapas restaurant but I had never actually ventured in to try it. My friends and I decided to go to the Thurlow Street location but there are various ones to choose from. I will start my review by saying that Japanese people are a lot like us Mexicans - we are both loud, friendly, and very welcoming. As we waited outside for our table, the hostess kept shouting (in a friendly way) at the customers who entered the restaurant in order to welcome them. It was almost as if they were old friends who hadn't seen each other for a decade or two - personally, I think this was a nice touch but others may disagree. About twenty minutes later we were given a nice table for four with cute little Japanese-style benche

Dreams DO come true!

Recently, I feel like my life has taken a 180 degree turn and that all things have finally fallen into place. In fact, everything is so perfect and smooth that it feels like I am living in a dream. If someone would have approached me two or three years ago and asked me where I would be living in the future I probably wouldn't have guessed it would be where I am now. A few months ago, my husband @guccisimo and I decided to start the journey of moving from Surrey back to downtown Vancouver. We started by noting the neighbourhoods and buildings we would like the most and by visiting SEVERAL open houses to narrow it down to a few select areas. The process of moving was very intense as we had to list our Surrey place and hope that it would sell fast so that we could start living our dream of waking up to the Vancouver skyline sooner rather than later. Thankfully, we have a family friend and realtor who managed to sell our condo in under three weeks. At that point we could almost ta

Calvin Harris Live - Electro Heaven on Earth?

Image
I don't know if it is because of my Latin-American background but somehow when I listen to good music my body just naturally starts to move to the beat. I enjoy all music genres as I appreciate music's diversity. However, when it comes to my absolute favourite music style I would need to go with electro. For those of you who may not be familiar with this genre of music, I would describe it as a mix of 80's synthesizers with a good selection of drums and dance beats. I find electro to be intense, yet sexy and seductive... and no, I'm not describing a person here :) My first face-to-face encounter with this type of music was back in 2002 when I went to see GusGus live at Sonar nightclub in Vancouver. I was literally in awe. When I purchased the tickets for their show I was not expecting to listen to electro for the first time, as GusGus' previous material was more dance-like. Needless to say, I fell in love. The crowd was going wild that night as we all rocked o
